NDAHL WILA WIN
"en-dach will-ah win" (How Are You?)
The Gitxsan live within the Northern Coast. Within the Northern Coast, the Coast Mountain Range acts as a natural barrier separating the Northwest Coast from the interior. Four major rivers penetrate this barrier: the Taku River, Stikine River, Nass River and the Skeena River.
Gitxsan communities are located primarily on the Skeena River and its tributaries above Kitselas Canyon. The Gitxsan people number approximately ten thousand around the world today. Of that estimate, almost 3500 individuals make their home in this area, with livelihoods as diverse as educators, professionals, loggers, fishermen and entrepreneurs.
Because nature provided a wealth of everything the Gitxsan required to live comfortably, they were able to establish permanent villages where families lived together.
We, the Gitxsan, encourage visitors to come and learn the ways of our people and explore our history. At the Ksan Historical Village and Museum, we have trained storytellers waiting to tell you who the Gitxsan were and are today.
